Amazon DSP brand safety: plan it before it costs you a client

Expert marketers choose the key inventory themselves, before third party inventory opens the plan up.

Brand safety problems usually show up as a disagreement or a complaint: someone with a say in the brand sees the ad next to something they don't like, and it costs you their trust.

For a brand, that means an uncomfortable conversation internally about where the budget went. For an agency it can cost a lot more: a pitch that goes to someone else, or a client you already have deciding it's time to move on.

Brand safety means making sure your ads don't appear next to content that could hurt your brand: misinformation, hate speech, or anything your brand wouldn't want to be associated with.

It starts with the plan

The simplest protection is choosing the publishers yourself, before anything goes live.

A traditional bank might find the right age group on Twitch, but a live gaming stream is rarely where that bank wants its logo. That call is easy to make in the plan and hard to explain after the campaign has run.

To make it, you need to know what Amazon DSP actually has in your market. That list keeps growing and is hard to keep track of, even if you buy it every day. So we put it on one page: https://victor.ad/inventory. Every publisher and format on Amazon DSP, country by country. Free, no account needed.

Safety options when the brand needs reach

You can't hand pick every publisher once the brand needs reach. The plan opens up to Amazon Publisher Services and other third party inventory, and you can no longer know every site and app your ads land on. That is where most of the problems I find in audits come from.

This is when Amazon's own controls become critical. Since December 2025 you can set content exclusion categories, which let you opt out of topics that don't fit your brand across Twitch and third party web and mobile inventory. You set them once in the interface under Inherited settings, General, Brand suitability, and the brand suitability report shows where your ads ran against them. Amazon explains it here. If a campaign is running on third party inventory without them, that is the first thing I would fix.

Final reach tip. Audio, a safer slice of inventory

The other option is to find reach somewhere safer, and audio is where I would look first. It costs more than banners, but in my experience it tends to be higher quality, on brand safety and on most of the other metrics that matter, because you are buying known publishers: Spotify, SiriusXM, Pandora and iHeartMedia.
